The Lorne Aquatic and Angling club was inaugurated February the 12th 1960.
The first foundations went down in 1961 with Alan Alsop, Len Wilson and Rex Baldy all life members. The club was small in size and had a winch house in front, which was very important in lowering and retrieving boats in the early days, down the Lorne Aquatic & Angling Club ramp. The winch was important to the Couta industry and did over the years save several Couta and visitors boats - towing them from a watery grave.
With the lack of use, costs and the disappearing Couta industry the winch was removed. Now on the site displays a totem pole with distances of towns displayed with a whale wind vain on top.
The club has doubled in size with extensions and a tractor shed added in 1998. The club in 1999 built a large BBQ (known as "Bills" BBQ a long time cook and life member). This added attraction enhanced the beer garden and has become a very popular place and with live bands makes a great atmosphere in the warmer months.
The club reached 800 in membership at it's height when construction sites and renovations were made on the Cumberland, mantra, Kalimna and Cora Lyn and later the Lorne pier. It now averages around 490 members and holds 11 fishing competitions a year, which run in conjunction with BBQ's and sometimes live music. Great prizes for each competition and at the end of the year presentations. Anaconda the major sponsor. The club purchased a tractor in the late 90's for members to put boats in and out at the same time enlarging the fish cleaning area. Fishing at the club has a family flavour with both boat and rock fishing, the club is proud of it's fish handicapped system allowing for all ages to win a prize. In the early days the bar was only open weekends and on special occasions. But when the fisherman's bar closed in the late 90's the public and members decided this club needed to be open seven days a week most times of the year.
The Aquatic & Angling club boat ramp is used every year for the start of the Lorne pier to pub swim - making the Aquatic club the most sort after viewing point.
The club may be small in structure but attracts many visitors and is used for a wide range of functions, birthdays, meetings etc.
With cheap membership, the cheapest drinks in town, fantastic views and a warm social atmosphere, the aquatic & angling club is a must visit attraction when staying in Lorne.
